The Key to Understanding Your Fundamentals

Every business has the same pillars that hold it up, from Apple to Amazon to your local corner store. Just because you have a medical practice does not make it any different.

In fact one of the “penny drop moments I had as a doctor and business owner is the understanding of these pillars and how they relate to my practice.

The pillars are as follows

Marketing

Sales

Product/Service

Operations and Logistics

Finance

Marketing is getting your message across to someone so you can make a sale of your product or service. That is 3 pillars in one sentence.

As a GP or specialist clinic a lot of our patients/clients come from referrals (this our our marketing channel) and the sale occurs as we book the patient in for appointment and then perform the consultation to offer our service .

The service we sell is our medical expertise and therapy. The operations is how all this works logistically and the finance is the revenue and expenses that make this cycle go around.

Each pillar of course can be broken down and in each pillar we can have experts that over see everything. In the most start up’s that is the business owner or doctor.

Welcome

My name is Jack Zoumaras and I am a doctor and a plastic surgeon. The reason why I still call myself a doctor first is that is exactly who I am and who I wanted to become since I was 5 years old. I am from Adelaide originally and still a parochial crow supporter, but have been in Sydney since 2005. After completed specialist training in the old basic surgical training and then advance training I received my fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery in January 2013. I then undertook two fellowships in 2013 and the first half of 2014. I was fortunate to spend time at Ivy league school Colombia University in New York in 2013 and then Clinic Bizet Paris from October 2013 to mid 2014. When I arrived back home to Sydney we got pregnant and I planned to open my practice despite a lot of discouragement from colleagues. Artiste Plastic Surgery was founded in 2014 officially but the concept was earmarked since 2013 on my fellowship. We opened the doors in 2015 and then in 2017 we launched Artiste MediSpa. I have spoken and engaged many people in my business and have made some terrible business decisions, because in the beginning you just don't know what you don't know. I have given a lot of business advice for many doctor colleagues and decided to set up doctor2doctor to help other doctors with their business life. I am in a unique position with still being in the clinical environment and understand the nuances of medicine, medicare and AHPRA and run a business.

Background

It is will known that Doctors have a photographic memory and are in the top 95% when it comes to High School scores and are straight A students. Why is it then that so many successful business owners who probably don't have the same intellect achieve more financially. The reasons are simple, as doctors we have the unique 'job' of looking after people and saving lives, and this is the motivation many including myself for choosing medicine as a career. To be a doctor we are high achievers in high school and learn countless facts and pathways relevant to the human body that skills us in order to be a health practitioner. We work evenings, weekends, public holidays including Xmas day, the hospital does not close and people are always sick. We simply don't have the time to be involved with our business or in someone else's business. Business has systems and processes, like studying physiology and pathology, we can learn this and apply to our business lives that allows us to have financial freedom. I have learned the hard way by listening to financial advisers, bank managers, marketing agencies but once you learn your own business fundamentals you begin to learn you have been taken advantage of. I want to pass on my business experience to other doctors so they can make informed decisions with their business. The key we all have is doctors is our unique ability to learn and understand something new very quickly.
